| "Suddenly
my rear gunner called over the intercom, "Fighter, corkscrew
starboard go!" As soon as I heard starboard I immediately
hit the right rudder, gave the Lanc right aileron and down we went,
with Mitch firing his four .303 guns, and then as the Ju 88 broke
away upwards and over us, my mid-upper gunner blazed away at it with
his two .303 guns.
"With
our guns blazing away, the interior of the Lancaster lit up like
daylight - it still had daylight tracer bullets from its last daylight
trip. It was so bright inside the cockpit; I can still see Bill,
our flight engineer, bending down beside me with his hands on his
head while the bullets were flying. I reached back with my left
hand to see if the steel plate was in place behind my head, and
made sure I leaned slightly forward in case it got hit.
"We
must have shot down that Junkers 88, but we couldn't tell because
we went down into the clouds to starboard, and he went down the
other direction into them. If we didn't get it, it certainly would
have been riddled with bullet holes!" (From Chapter 2, the
author, a Lancaster bomber pilot.)
"I
guess what it does mean is that we have to be eternally vigilant
to make sure that the demagogues and the psychopaths do not get
into positions where they can do harm." (From Chapter 5, Alan
Emmott, a Lancaster Pathfinder navigator.)
"I
can tell you now how sad a commentary it is that people on Earth
had to go through the horrors of war. There is, however, an end
in sight. I am pleased to say that strong influences from this side
(spirit-side) are coming to bear more heavily on those who would,
and do, instigate atrocities and wars. A new era is dawning."
(From Chapter 18, Guy Gibson, VC, the celebrated RAF pilot of Dambuster
fame.)
"War
is a terrible thing, and should not be glamorized. It is evidence
of the failure of mankind to follow the principle of universal love;
however, I am told from high spirit sources that we are on a path
to a brighter future." (From Chapter 21, the author.)
